Student Council

Introduction

The Student Council was first established in 2018. It is made up of elected members from 3rd to 6th Class. Each member has an assigned role and a responsibility. The pupil voice is extremely important and is a valuable resource in our school. The Student Council are regularly consulted in policy making and help in many different ways to improve all aspects of school life.

There are suggestion boxes in each classroom for children to share ideas and suggestions. The Student Council meet regularly. They represent our school and are the voice of the pupils in our school.

The Student Council recently organised and led our very first school Friendship week. They also had a crucial role to play in our Anti-Bullying week.

Every year the Student Council decide on an area of the school they would like to improve upon. They plan, organise and fundraise. Last year the Student Council held a Bake Sale to raise funds for yard markings for playground games for both the senior and junior yards. It was a huge success. Read on to find out more about the Student Council from current members.

Team Hope Christmas Box Appeal

In November 2024, our Student Council led a school initiative taking part in Team Hope’s Christmas Shoebox Appeal. It is an annual campaign that delivers gifts straight into the hands of children affected by poverty. 232 boxes were donated by students and their families, so we would like to express a huge thank you to everyone who participated and for helping us to make a difference in the lives of children in need.

Fundraising 2023

On the 2nd of June 2023, the Student Council hosted their annual bake sale to fundraise for new goal posts for our all weather pitch and some outdoor sensory play equipment. We had a fantastic day and managed to fundraise €2300. We’d like to take this opportunity to send out a huge thank you to the staff, parents and children in our school who both baked and bought goodies on the day.

We are delighted to share with you that as a result of this fantastic event, our new goal posts and sensory play area are open for business!

Every day, children are able to take part in outdoor sensory play using the mud kitchens, cooking equipment and natural materials, write recipes on our new chalk boards and even get digging in the new sand pit!

At break times,  football matches, penalty shoot outs and free taking are now a regular occurrence thanks to our new goal posts too!

We would like to say a massive thank you to Kevin for his talent, hard work and craftsmanship in assembling both the sensory area and the goal posts!

The Student Council is now up and running again for this school year! If you ever have any ideas on how you think school life could be improved, talk to a student council member or add a suggestion to your class suggestion box! And remember, the Student Council make it fair, if you need anything, we’ll be there!

Official Opening of the Mud Kitchen

Today, 26th October 2023 we had our official opening of the Mud Kitchen. Ms Kelly cut the ribbon and there was great excitement as the Student Council had their first chance to try out the kitchen. Congratulations to the Student Council. The mud kitchen will bring hours of fun for all the children for years to come.

Friendship Week 2022

By Amy and Anabelle from the Student Council

A few weeks ago our school celebrated Friendship week for the first time ever! We celebrated it from the 3rd Oct – 9th Oct. The Student Council gave out friendship stickers in the yard and in the classrooms. We also made announcements on the intercom everyday. The reason we celebrated Friendship week was because we wanted to get everyone to be nice to each other and to maybe play with someone you wouldn’t normally play with. Overall Friendship week was a great success and a great week.

Yard Markings / Playground Games

By Muireann and Craig

At the start of 2022 the Student Council decided to fund-raise for new yard markings for multiple reasons. The existing yard markings were beginning to fade and lose visibility and we wanted to include the whole school as the Student Council is made up of students from 3rd to 6th class. Of course, it was also highly requested that more activities are available on the yard. We thought a bake sale was a great idea as it went down so well by the Student Council a few years ago.

The bake sale was held on the 31st May in the P.E. hall. Everyone had an amazing day. We even ran out of food to sell! In total we raised €1690!!!

The new yard markings were put in during the summer holidays. Now everyday at break-time you can see lots of children playing life sized board games, hopscotch, twister, obstacle courses and many, many more.

We hope to fund-raise again soon. You can put suggestions in your classrooms suggestion box if you have any ideas.

Remember “the Student Council make it fair, if you need anything we’ll be there”.
